When we visit my in-laws in the UK, every second Christmas, I like to take advantage of the fact that they live just outside Newcastle upon Tyne, home of the Ship Inn, Ouseburn. I ate there for the first time during my last visit, and made sure to return this time.

Deciding what to eat was not easy but I ended up choosing the jackfruit shawarma. Everything tasted really fresh and delicious.

So many choices on this menu that I want to eat.  Why, oh why did we only come here once during our stay?  Why is this place on the other side of the world from where I live? (I know, it wouldn’t do me much good to be there now, since we’re all staying at home all the time for the foreseeable future.)

It’s a long weekend in Australia this weekend, so I’ve got today *and* Monday off work. I’ve been craving the pulled jackfruit poutine that I enjoyed in Toronto last year, and I found a few recipes online but didn’t have all the ingredients. Instead, I decided to make BBQ jackfruit using this recipe from Clean Green Simple, and some homemade buns I’ve made before, and I served up these BBQ jackfruit burgers for lunch.

The jackfruit filling was very tasty. I cut down on the amount of cayenne suggested by the recipe but it was still enough to leave a nice tickle. This was a bit too spicy for kid #1, but kid #2 requested seconds.  I’ll definitely make this again.

BBQ jackfruit buns

Perhaps inspired by the Tibetan momos at the Eumundi markets, I decided to make BBQ jackfruit buns for lunch, using this recipe from Like a Vegan. I only had one tin of jackfruit in the cupboard, so I halved the recipe and made 8 buns.

I was pretty pleased with how they turned out, especially as I’d never made steamed dumplings before. Look how cute they looked sitting in the steamer, waiting to be steamed! I’ll definitely make this again.

BBQ jackfruit burger

Well, this stuff is fun to make. The idea is that if you marinate and fry tinned jackfruit, it will taste like pulled pork. For me, the hardest part was finding tinned jackfruit, until I visited an asian supermarket. (Important: you want the jackfruit that has been tinned in brine, not in syrup. Just passing on the warning.)

I followed Like A Vegan’s recipe and it worked out really well. The next day my 6 year old told me (out of the blue) how much he had enjoyed the burger.

I have another tin of jackfruit in the cupboard: next, I think I’ll try Like A Vegan’s recipe for steamed “pork”/jackfruit buns. Looks delicious.
